Greetings from the Green Chair!
I thought today would be a good opportunity to discuss the making of my very first book trailer! I just released it on Facebook and Instagram. I think it turned out rather well.
First, it was intended not only to get the word out about the first two books in my Kingdom of Jior fantasy series, but it was also to announce the upcoming third book, Heirs of Jior. You can read the full synopsis of book Three in my previous blog.
Second, I wanted to create a video that did the stories justice and I think I succeeded. How did I do it you may ask? Well, first, I watched a bunch of videos on YouTube about how to make a book trailer and how to use Spark Adobe (SA). It seemed simple enough. Wrong!
Because my marketing budget is exactly zero, I had to use the free version of SA I downloaded from the internet. Then I began following the lessons I learned on YouTube. SA was very easy to use and seemed rather intuitive, so I had no problems. It also had fantastic graphics to choose from and good music to choose from and I quickly caught on. However, (there is always a “however”) when I went to upload my book covers on-top of the eye-catching graphics, it would not let me. I could upload them onto a blank background, but how boring is that! There may be a way but I couldn’t readily find it and I’m sure if I paid for SA rather than using the free download, I would have had more functionality.
After much frustrating playing around. I decided, I’d go onto canva.com and make my slides, jpeg them and then upload them as my pictures which were pre-made with the words, graphics and book covers, everything. Bingo! I was really happy with that, but (there is always a “but”) I found that the “Spark Adobe” logo on each slide was covering up my book covers, so I had to maneuver them around the slides, re-make and re-upload them many times till I got it right. It was a real learning experience and took me hours and hours.
When it was done and I’d chosen my music from SA, I could not figure out how to slow the slides down so that the trailer didn’t fly through each one making it impossible to read the one or two sentences on each slide. So… I asked my wonderful husband who makes videos with his GoPro if he could help. Being a rocket-scientist, he knew exactly how to fix it and after uploading it to the GoPro studio software he was able to slow each slide down, better space the music so that it fit with the slides and come up with a much better final trailer.
So, there you have it! My first foray into book trailer making. Now, if it would only result in sales!
